Goldfish Hand Spawning

Don't try this method unless you have some skill and apply only when the fish have started agitation in the tank. We will take every fish in hand and we will gently squeeze in the anus region. If eggs comes out is a female and if a white smoke comes out is a male. The fish of which nothing comes are not ready for spawning or are not sexually mature and we will put them back in the tank. Having the fish sex separately we can begin "milking" operation.
Prepare a 10-15 liter tank, maximum 10 cm height, with an air pump. The water should be put in the tank 2-3 days ago with a 20-22° C temperature. Take one goldfish of different sex in each hand. With both fish bodies in the water, we gentle massage their belly, from head to anus. Will come out eggs from both female and male, fertilization being done immediately. We repeat this massages until nothing comes out.
"Milking" will be done easy and careful, not to break the fish bladder. After finishing this operation, the fish will be introduced in the tank and will be fed. Usually, goldfish start breeding at 4-5 o'clock in the morning, so if you want to practice this method, you'll have to wake up early.
The water from the breeding tank will have a misty appearance due to eggs from male. After 10-15 minutes, we will change the water from the breeding tank (don't worry, the eggs are sticky on the glass and will not fall) with clear water at the same temperature. Now, all we can do is wait, everything is just like at a natural breeding.
Bellow is a movie to make you understand better the hand spawning.

  1. I have seen this method done in real but trust me its not easy....when I tried my fish wriggled out from my hand...didnt get guts to do that again......if not done right your female gold could die by ovarian rupture.... people who are planing to do this should practise like hundred times on cheap fishes first before you try on your best gold pair....

    I like your blog...nice work ...

  3. well.. i tried hand spawning.... i took the eggs from my goldfish by squeezing its tummy and after no more eggs come out then i took my male gold fish and i squeezed their tummy too and there comes out a milk like thing... and so it mixed up with the eggs.... so I put them aside afterward and waited for three days for the hatching time... but here comes the third, the fourth and the fifth day but no single egg hatched.. all were unfertilized... all turned to white and became furry..... FOR CRYING OUT LOUD why none of the eggs hatched?

I put the sperm of the male Goldfish to the eggs... and i think i did well during the hand spawning process! I just don't understand why... and what's worse is that I did it for almost three times...and it all resulted to one thing ---- none of the eggs hatched.. all turned to white!

anyone can help me with my problem.... and also guys i tried the normal spawning of the gold fish and yeah there are a lot of eggs that stuck to the roots of my water plants.. but the sad thing is that... for almost thousands of eggs only about 30 eggs got fertilized and hatched.... hmmmmm i really need help...

If anyone has an answer to my problem please try to send me an email....

this is my email : navy_boy66@yahoo.com

    1. Hi, I try using hand spawning few time also without success. Maybe due to the hand spawning when doing for the male, u can feel/see some white sticky thing coming, this is not the milt, it's the slime of the fish. there is once I did quite successful, only then I understand to feel the milt myself. Now I will for the male first before the female.
my rate was good but too bad, the fry die

  4. I am thinking of hand spawning my goldfish. Is there a certain time of year this is done. If the females are fat then are they always ready. Likewise for the males.

  5. I encountered exactly the same problem navy_boy66 did. But I have had many experiences of successful natural breedings. May be we've reversed the order. As suggested by a comment in the link below. Eggs can only be fertilized in the first 15 seconds and so it it the male that must come first. http://goldfishkeepers.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-2408.html
I'll try to follow the suggesttion next time probably in the near future as I have a female which lays eggs all year round.

  6. For a week my goldish were doing the regular natural breeding ritual where the male chases the female to get her to release her eggs. I had read online to separate them for 2-3 days so that the female got rest and that they would both be more eager to breed. I did that, and I put them back in a couple of days ago and i haven't seen a difference. Should I try hand spawning?

    1. They are stress out, one main reason is your hand is warm this will stress them, that is why in handling goldfish make sure you had dip your hands to cold water before touching them

  8. How will determine if the female is ready to be handspawn?
